Cécilia Gross is an architect, partner, and director at VenhoevenCS architecture+urbanism whose journey in architecture began with a fascination for Dutch architecture, eventually leading her to relocate to Amsterdam in 2001. Since joining VenhoevenCS in 2003, she has played a pivotal role in shaping the firm's ethos of nature-inclusive design and promoting biodiversity.

Cécilia's expertise lies in realising highly complex projects that integrate architectural and urban concerns seamlessly. From the MicroCity Het Platform in Utrecht to infrastructure projects like the Alkmaar Railway Station design, her portfolio showcases a diverse range of achievements.

Beyond her architectural endeavours, Cécilia is a prominent voice in debates on sustainable cities. She serves on the judging panels of esteemed institutions like the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Paris Malaquais. Additionally, as the president of the jury for diploma defences in architecture at INSA of Strasbourg, she contributes significantly to shaping the next generation of architects.

With her endeavours in exporting architectural expertise to France, including winning the competition for the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games Aquatic Centre and Urban Crossing, Cécilia leaves a lasting impact on the global architectural landscape.

Partnership at VenhoevenCS

Cécilia's journey in architecture and urbanism leading up to her role as a partner at VenhoevenCS is marked by a deep-seated passion for the field. Her fascination with architecture began during her teenage years, envisioning it as an ideal fusion of technical prowess and creative expression. This interest blossomed into a profound love affair as she delved into the study of Architecture at INSA Strasbourg, where she gained a comprehensive understanding of its multifaceted nature.

What truly enamoured Cécilia was the holistic approach that architecture embodies, encompassing elements of technology, environmental consciousness, social impact, aesthetics, and the natural world. Each project presents a unique puzzle to solve, requiring a tailored solution that harmonises with its specific context. Drawing from her professional and personal experiences, she sees architecture as a means to craft inviting spaces that enhance people's quality of life.

Her journey took an enriching turn during an exchange program with TU Delft in 2000, where she was introduced to the Dutch conceptual and integral approach to design. Following her graduation in Strasbourg in 2001, Cécilia made the bold decision to relocate to Amsterdam and embark on her professional journey.

At VenhoevenCS, she found the ideal platform to cultivate her vision and expertise under the guidance of Ton Venhoeven. Ton's remarkable ability to inspire and empower team members allowed Cécilia to flourish within the firm's values. Over two decades of collaboration, she honed her skills and embraced the ethos of VenhoevenCS.

Seven years ago, Cécilia joined the ranks of VenhoevenCS's direction team, alongside four new partners and Ton himself. Together, they have nurtured the office's values and steered its projects towards realisation. As a diverse and motivated leadership team, they are committed to expanding the firm's influence with ambition, dedication, and a spirit of optimism.

Collaborative Leadership: Cécilia's Influence at VenhoevenCS

At the core of VenhoevenCS's success is its team-centric approach. Cécilia emphasises the importance of fostering a culture where individuals thrive as team players, empowered to take ownership and contribute fresh insights. For her, the talent within the office is the cornerstone of innovation and excellence in project execution.

Drawing from her rich background and experiences, Cécilia's leadership style is marked by a genuine interest in people. Her innate ability to connect with others and inspire them extends both internally and externally. Within the office, she cultivates an environment where dialogue flourishes, encouraging team members to listen, exchange ideas, and challenge perspectives. Moreover, Cécilia's leadership is guided by her instinctive nature and a remarkable capacity for visualisation. Every thought and every feeling effortlessly translates into vivid imagery, serving as a source of inspiration.

Lessons in Leading Architectural Marvels

"At the heart of every successful project lies a unified and motivated team," asserts Cécilia. Recognising that success hinges upon the collective efforts of diverse stakeholders—from clients and municipalities to developers, builders, engineers, and architects—she underscores the importance of fostering a collaborative environment from the project's inception.

Investing time upfront to cultivate relationships and nurture a sense of camaraderie among stakeholders proves instrumental in overcoming challenges and achieving remarkable outcomes. Cécilia cites the Aquatics Centre in Saint-Denis, France, designed for the upcoming Olympic Games, as a shining example of this collaborative ethos in action.

Collaborating closely with esteemed partners, such as French architecture firm Ateliers 2/3/4/ and structural engineers SPB, alongside the unwavering support of the Metropole du Grand Paris, builder Bouygues, and RECREA, the project exemplifies the power of unity and shared vision. Despite encountering numerous hurdles along the way, the team's collective resolve and professionalism ensured that challenges were met head-on and resolved collaboratively.

Sustainability as VenhoevenCS's Visionary Business Strategy

"Our philosophy is grounded in a holistic perspective," explains Cécilia. "We envision a world where all life forms coexist in sustainable equilibrium, and design serves as the catalyst for this transformative change." This ethos underpins their multifaceted research, design, and consultancy practice, drawing inspiration from nature's self-sustaining ecosystems.

The firm's commitment to sustainability is evident in its diverse portfolio, spanning a spectrum of scales and interventions. Their projects range from sports facilities and schools to infrastructure and transportation hubs and from interior design to strategic regional master planning.

Not content with confining their impact to the Netherlands, VenhoevenCS has extended its reach globally, undertaking projects in Belgium, France, Germany, China, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe. This expansive international presence not only diversifies its client base but also insulates the firm from economic dependencies, ensuring stability across diverse economic landscapes. "Our business strategy is a reflection of our vision and interests," notes Cécilia.

Approach to Client Engagement

"Our client base reflects the breadth and diversity of our projects," notes Cécilia. From public institutions to private developers, their clientele spans a wide range, fostering a rich tapestry of collaborative opportunities. This diversity not only stimulates their creativity but also enhances their impact in creating more sustainable and attractive spaces.

Despite the varied nature of their clients, Cécilia embraces each project as an opportunity to push the boundaries of sustainability and innovation. By encouraging clients to expand their ambitions and explore new possibilities, the firm seeks to foster a culture of continuous improvement and forward-thinking design.

A prime example of this approach is showcased in their recent project, the underground parking cycle at the back of Central Station Amsterdam. While the client's initial brief focused primarily on functional requirements, VenhoevenCS seized the opportunity to introduce an additional dimension of ecological sustainability.

In a move that went beyond the client's expectations, the firm incorporated features aimed at enhancing the ecological conditions in the surrounding waterways. Elements such as bio huts, natural materials, and porous concrete were integrated into the design to mimic natural habitats and promote biodiversity.

This innovative approach not only demonstrates VenhoevenCS's commitment to environmental stewardship but also underscores its ability to collaborate closely with clients to achieve shared sustainability goals. By inspiring clients to embrace ambitious design principles, the firm paves the way for transformative projects that leave a lasting positive impact on the built environment.

Winning Formula for Client Engagement

“Do what you preach. We strongly believe in our values and impact. By constantly designing with our values and spreading knowledge and understanding of them among the stakeholders of the project we can have an impact. As soon as a client lives a project experience and realises he is also part of that impact, it makes our collaboration a success and generates new collaborations.” says Cécilia.

VenhoevenCS's ability to differentiate itself lies in its authenticity and integrity. By embodying their values in every aspect of their work and nurturing client relationships based on transparency and shared purpose, the firm continues to redefine the standards of excellence in the built environment sector.

VenhoevenCS's Journey of Growth and Design Evolution

Since its inception in 2003, VenhoevenCS has embarked on a remarkable journey of growth and evolution, reshaping both its business landscape and design philosophy. "Like many architectural firms, VenhoevenCS has experienced fluctuations in size and scope over the years, driven by economic dynamics," reflects Cécilia. However, a pivotal moment came with the addition of five partners, propelling the firm into a new era of expansion and diversification. With a team now ranging from 50 to 70 individuals, VenhoevenCS has cultivated a vibrant studio environment that nurtures diverse expertise.

Central to this evolution is a steadfast commitment to promoting diversity as a catalyst for creativity. Embracing a common value of designing sustainable spaces, the firm harnesses the power of varied perspectives to push the boundaries of innovation and excellence in design. This commitment to diversity not only enriches their projects but also reflects a broader ethos of inclusivity and social responsibility.

While the firm's business landscape has undergone significant transformation, its design philosophy remains rooted in timeless principles. “The design philosophy is evolving with the years because our society and practice are also evolving but the fundamentals are still the same,” says Cécilia.

Charting a Sustainable Trajectory through Milestone Projects

The Aquatics Center stands as a beacon of VenhoevenCS's ethos and impact. This iconic structure exemplifies the firm's dedication to pushing boundaries and fostering positive change through design. Yet, perhaps even more eagerly anticipated is the forthcoming realisation of the Zoé residential building. Here, the firm takes a bold step forward, centring design around the principles of nature inclusivity, thanks to a close collaboration with DS landscape architects.

Another pivotal moment in VenhoevenCS's journey comes in the form of a recent publication from the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The firm's involvement in developing design guidelines for neighbourhood development around stations underscores their broader mission to create better living environments and leverage the connectivity benefits of transportation hubs. These guidelines, crafted in collaboration with stakeholders, offer a framework for sustainable urban development that transcends individual locations.

Adaptive Journey in Architecture

"Our looking forward approach drives us to innovate, experiment, and realise bold ideas in every project," explains Cécilia. This is exemplified by their participation in a design competition in South Korea back in 2005, where they were tasked with envisioning a new city for half a million inhabitants. Instead of shying away from the ambitious scope of the project, the firm assembled a team of visionaries and embarked on a journey of exploration and discovery.

The result was a groundbreaking concept—a city designed around the principles of walkability and sustainability. Every aspect of the urban fabric was meticulously planned to prioritise pedestrian mobility, with key amenities and natural spaces easily accessible within a short distance. By embracing compactness and integrating nature into the urban environment, VenhoevenCS set a precedent for sustainable urban design that continues to resonate today.

Remarkably, this visionary project conceived almost two decades ago, foreshadowed many of the themes that are now at the forefront of architectural discourse. From the concept of the "15-minute city" championed by Carlos Moreno to the recognition of nature as a vital component of the built environment, VenhoevenCS's forward-thinking approach has proven to be ahead of its time.

“Open your eyes and your ears, meet people, exchange thoughts and build your own impact motivation box. Only by speaking about a topic that you really care about and are driven towards can you make a difference” says Cécilia.

Bridging Borders

For Cécilia, the experience of exporting architectural expertise back to her home country, France, has been nothing short of transformative. "It's a unique opportunity to blend my professional experience in the Netherlands with my French cultural background," she reflects. This convergence of perspectives allows her to navigate the intricacies of French building methods, regulations, and urban frameworks while infusing projects with a touch of familiarity and cultural resonance.

Yet, the journey of exporting architectural know-how is not without its challenges. "I had to relearn certain aspects of architectural practice," admits Cécilia. However, the familiarity of communication in her native language provides a sense of comfort and confidence, facilitating smoother project execution and client engagement. One standout example of international collaboration is the Aquatics Center project, where diverse perspectives converged to foster creativity and innovation. "The dynamic exchange within the international team was essential for pushing the boundaries of design," notes Cécilia.

Working on international projects brings a unique set of challenges and opportunities for VenhoevenCS. Embracing cultural diversity fosters creativity and innovation, as differing perspectives spark new ideas. While adapting to different practices and communication styles can be daunting, it ultimately inspires growth and encourages self-reflection and VenhoevenCS thrives on this dynamic exchange.

"At its core, architecture is about understanding diverse fields and translating them into physical spaces," notes Cécilia. This interdisciplinary approach allows architects to create environments that seamlessly integrate the needs of people, nature, and society. It's a reminder that we all inhabit the same space and that every detail contributes to the greater whole. VenhoevenCS's commitment to addressing global environmental challenges is evident in its wide-ranging projects and initiatives. By embracing a holistic approach and striving for harmony across all aspects of design, the firm creates spaces that inspire and sustain life.

Insights and Career Reflections

Reflecting on her career trajectory, Cécilia emphasises the importance of embracing failure as a catalyst for learning and improvement. "Falling and failure are integral parts of the journey," she acknowledges. "If you believe, dare, and aren't afraid to stumble, each setback becomes a valuable lesson in becoming better."

Central to Cécilia's success has been the realisation that leadership is not a solitary endeavour—it thrives on collaboration, trust, and inspiration. "Being part of a team, with partners you trust and draw inspiration from, is essential," she affirms. "It instils confidence, belief, and a sense of support that propels us forward." In acknowledging the significance of her partnerships, Cécilia underscores the transformative power of collective vision and shared values.

Had she known these insights earlier in her career, Cécilia believes they would have profoundly influenced her approach to both architectural design and business leadership at VenhoevenCS. By embracing failure as a stepping stone to growth and fostering a collaborative team environment grounded in trust and inspiration, she would have navigated challenges with greater resilience and creativity.

Cécilia's journey at VenhoevenCS reflects a profound dedication to architecture's transformative potential and a steadfast commitment to sustainability, innovation, and collaboration. From her formative years fueled by a passion for architecture to her leadership role as a partner, Cécilia's career embodies resilience, creativity, and a holistic approach to design.

Her reflections offer invaluable insights for emerging architects and business leaders, emphasising the importance of embracing failure as a catalyst for growth, nurturing collaborative partnerships, and maintaining a forward-thinking mindset. As VenhoevenCS continues to shape the built environment with its visionary projects and initiatives, Cécilia's leadership inspires the profession to push boundaries, foster sustainability, and create spaces that enrich lives and communities worldwide.
