In the dynamic realm of architecture, where innovation serves as the bedrock of transformative design, a select few visionaries stand out for their relentless pursuit of excellence and a distinctive knack for challenging conventional norms. One such architect, with an impressive portfolio that spans continents—from Europe and the US to Asia and MENA—brings an unparalleled depth of experience and a refreshing perspective to every project.

Alexander Drachenberg, an Associate Design Architect at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), currently resides in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. His career includes tenures at renowned architectural firms such as UNStudio and HPP Architekten, highlighting a trajectory steeped in innovation and exceptional architectural accomplishments.

Fueled by an unyielding curiosity and a profound passion for the latest technological advancements, Alexander leverages computational design to deliver solutions that break free from traditional confines. His contributions, which range from high-end hospitality projects to pioneering sustainable architecture, are distinguished by a seamless blend of creative ingenuity, technical expertise, and a deep comprehension of the built environment’s nuances.

In the tapestry of the design world, passion often serves as the common thread among its most devoted practitioners. Alexander Drachenberg exemplifies this zeal, placing a premium on design solutions that marry functionality with complexity. While many creatives naturally gravitate towards artistic expression, he's drawn to the intricate interplay of mathematics and its foundational role. Numbers, for him, are not just symbols but gateways to understanding the underlying complexity of the world, including architecture.

Alexander's academic and practical foundation in architecture was solidified in Germany, where he had the opportunity to work as a Junior Architectural Designer for HPP Architekten —a firm renowned for its global footprint and innovative philosophy. It was here, through projects extending to Turkey and other culturally rich locales, that Alexander's design perspective was expansively enriched. This exposure to a myriad of architectural styles and practices deepened his interest in the field.

During his time at HPP, Alexander became acutely aware of the nuanced dynamics within large-scale architectural firms. In such environments, specialisation is crucial; professionals may find themselves focusing intensely on either design intricacies or technical details. This specialisation, though advantageous for deep expertise, stands in contrast to the jack-of-all-trades nature required in smaller studios. In these settings, an architect might juggle design responsibilities with roles in marketing or business development.

The synthesis of Alexander's experiences in both highly professional settings and boutique firms has been instrumental in his career to date. This blend has endowed him with a balance of specialisation and adaptability—skills that empower him to navigate the complex and ever-evolving world of architecture. His journey underscores a professional equipped not only with a robust skill set but also with the confidence to tackle complex architectural challenges.

Alexander spent his graduate degree in architecture specialising in computational design. Upon graduation, Alexander's prowess in computational design caught the attention of a renowned design practice UNStudio, offering him an opportunity to apply his skills within a professional context. Seizing the chance to expand his expertise, Alexander embraced the role, where he began working on the FOUR Frankfurt Tower project in Frankfurt, Germany. Tasked with leading the design for one of the towers, Alexander navigated the complexities of this extensive residential, hotel and retail complex.

Interested in gaining professional experience in a different type of setting, Alexander was struck by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s (SOM) unique operational model. SOM integrates a wide range of specialists within the firm. This includes structural engineers, urban planners, sustainability leaders, and interior designers, all collaborating under one roof. The interdisciplinary nature of SOM not only piqued Alexander's curiosity but also highlighted how collaboration can be harnessed. He joined the firm in 2018.

Navigating different Architectural Perspectives

In traditional architectural firms where engineers or sustainability specialists are contracted externally, the interaction is often confined to structured meetings, limiting deep collaboration and extended working sessions. In contrast, the integrated environment at SOM offered Alexander firsthand insights into the intricate dynamics of various specialities, from the interplay among teams to the unique aspects of their workspaces.

SOM itself is a wellspring of inspiration, exposing staff to processes that greatly enhance creative thought. The proximity and accessibility of specialists foster an ongoing dialogue and an organic exchange of ideas throughout the design journey.

While at SOM, Alexander’s professional path has led him from the Chicago office, to London and subsequently to Dubai. His tenure in Chicago was particularly enriching, immersing him in the city’s rich architectural heritage and diversity.

Reflecting on his journey, Alexander observed the differences between the design approaches at his previous firm, UNStudio, known for its conceptual innovations and modern aesthetics, and SOM’s timeless, multi-disciplinary perspective. Each approach offers unique benefits, catering to varying client needs and fostering architectural diversity. By embracing this diversity, Alexander believes that the architectural landscape can remain vibrant and adaptable, reflecting the myriad philosophies and visions that shape our built environment.

Evolution of Sustainability

Sustainability has emerged as a critical consideration in architecture, reflecting its increasing importance in all aspects of modern life. For Alexander, recognising the role of sustainable design practices has been a pivotal element of his professional evolution. At SOM, the commitment to sustainability is evident through a dedicated team, well-versed in the latest ecological practices and equipped with deep expertise.

Sustainability experts collaborate closely with the design group. This strategic collaboration ensures that ecological considerations are embedded in the design process right from its inception, avoiding the traditional route of retrofitting sustainability features after the design is nearly finalised. Instead, the team employs data-driven insights to inform and shape the project from the ground up.

This cohesive approach not only streamlines the design process but also significantly enhances value for clients. By harnessing the collective knowledge and intellectual capital within the firm, clients are provided with informed design solutions that address the specific challenges and requirements of their projects. As a result, clients receive not just architectural designs but comprehensive, sustainable solutions that meet their needs and advance their goals.

Working across Diverse Architectural Environments

Alexander’s architectural career has been characterised by a series of significant geographic and professional transitions, each offering unique insights and challenges. His journey, which has taken him from Chicago to London and ultimately to Dubai, has immersed him in diverse design environments, each shaped by distinct cultural nuances and regional contexts.

Beginning his SOM career in the Chicago office, Alexander's exposure to a variety of projects across the US and China enriched his understanding of different architectural methodologies. Working closely with SOM’s local office in China, he gained a deep appreciation for the region's unique design paradigms.

Upon relocating to London, his focus shifted towards European and Middle Eastern projects, each presenting a new set of challenges and opportunities. These transitions allowed Alexander to refine his skills, adapting to varied cultural, climatic, and environmental conditions. This adaptability has proven essential, enabling him to draw on experiences from one context to inform solutions in another, enhancing his ability to innovate within the firm.

The move to Dubai was strategically driven by a growing portfolio of projects in the Middle East. Transitioning from London to Dubai enabled Alexander to work more closely with local teams and clients.

The establishment of SOM's Dubai office seven years ago underscores the firm’s commitment to deepening local relationships and improving operational efficiency. As a strategic hub, the Dubai office not only facilitates direct client interactions but also enhances project management. With a dedicated local team, the necessity for frequent travel from other offices is reduced and minimises the firm’s carbon footprint.

Maintaining Relationships and Business Development

The Dubai office emphasises a strategic approach that balances nurturing existing client relationships with supporting new business opportunities. This dual focus is critical for strengthening the office's position within the vibrant architectural landscape of the region.

Alexander's role involves a finely tuned equilibrium between maintaining these relationships and fostering fresh collaborations, besides his primary responsibilities, which include project design and management.

Beyond the direct responsibilities of project oversight, Alexander engages with the broader industry. He connects at events and lectures to keep pace with emerging trends and meet with other professionals specialising in computational design and architecture. Networking in these settings is not just about staying updated; it's also an opportunity for Alexander to scout and recruit potential talent to further enrich the Dubai team.

In this multifaceted role, Alexander supports SOM’s current projects as well as future growth and success in one of the world's fastest-growing regions.

The Way Forward

In discussions about future trends within Dubai's and the region’s unique environment, Alexander brings to light the specific opportunities. Alexander observes Dubai's transformation into a destination for people to live, rather than merely a transit point or holiday destination, indicative of the region's development. He is impressed by the concentration of talent and the proliferation of innovative ideas, precisely the combination necessary for groundbreaking solutions. With this, he anticipates the emergence of pioneering architectural solutions and disruptive concepts that will set the global standard. He attributes this to the region's unwavering dedication and visionary mindset, fostering the exploration of unprecedented creations.

Highlighting SOM's diverse project portfolio in Dubai, Alexander expresses a deep sense of pride in his colleagues’ contributions to Dubai’s skyline. Iconic projects like the Burj Khalifa and the Cayan Tower stand as testaments to architectural ambition and innovation, inspiring both residents and visitors. Additionally, he points out the Mashreq Bank, notable for being the first commercial LEED Zero operational building in the UAE, set a precedent for sustainable building practices in the region when completed in 2019.

SOM’s influence extends beyond these landmarks, encompassing a variety of projects ranging from extensive master plans to intricate building components. This range allows SOM to engage with multiple architectural disciplines, from designing towering structures and vital infrastructures to smaller-scale investigations into sustainable construction, evidenced by the recent low-carbon pavilion built at COP28 in Dubai.

Through these endeavours, Alexander and SOM continue to participate in shaping Dubai’s and the region's architectural narrative, pushing the boundaries of design and sustainability in one of the world’s most dynamic urban environments.

Fostering Culturally Diverse Teams

Alexander describes a typical day in his role, punctuated by a series of collaborative interactions that keep the project momentum going. His schedule includes team catch-ups, detailed discussions on project progress, meetings with consultants, and workshops with clients and specialists.

Creating a supportive and inclusive atmosphere within the team is a priority at SOM. Alexander is committed to ensuring that every team member feels confident and valued in contributing their ideas, irrespective of their role or seniority. By promoting an environment where every suggestion is considered, Alexander helps to foster a culture of open discussion and creative problem-solving. This inclusive approach often leads to innovative solutions that may not have emerged in a more hierarchical setting.

Moreover, Alexander is keen on mentoring young designers within the Dubai team. He encourages an open flow of ideas and treats the input of all team members with equal importance. This practice not only bolsters collaboration but also empowers individuals to confidently express and develop their ideas. In doing so, it enhances their self-esteem and nurtures the essential skills needed for their growth in the architectural field.

In cultivating a collaborative and supportive atmosphere, Alexander underscores the vital importance of also keeping pace with the swiftly evolving technological landscape. From employing parametric software to refine and experiment with concepts, SOM maintains a vigilant watch over cutting-edge advancements in architectural technology. By instilling a culture of embracing innovative tools, each tailored to amplify creativity or streamline processes, Alexander guarantees readiness to confront the challenges that lie ahead. This approach not only ensures that projects run smoothly but also upholds the highest standards of professional practice within the architectural field.

Equity at SOM

Alexander sheds light on the intricacies of SOM's organisational structure, detailing the roles within each office, which include a number of partners who lead the firm. These partners are not only pivotal in steering the office operations but also in leading design teams and managing the business.

Importantly, Alexander highlights the firm’s commitment to diversity at all professional levels, noting that the firm is currently led by an executive committee of three women and more than 60% of the Dubai office is comprised of women.

This representation is a point of pride and an indication of SOM's progressive stance on gender inclusivity within corporate leadership, reflecting a modern approach to leadership that champions diversity and inclusivity.

Alexander's career journey illustrates the profound impact of embracing diversity and understanding cultural contexts in architecture. His transitions from Germany to Amsterdam to Chicago to London, and ultimately to Dubai, have not only broadened his architectural perspective but also deepened his appreciation for the ways in which architecture influences community and cultural identity. His approach is marked by inclusivity and adaptability, qualities that define him as adept at navigating the complexities of a swiftly evolving architectural landscape.

Alexander stands as a source of inspiration for both budding architects and seasoned professionals. In a field where innovation intersects with tradition, Alexander’s career narrative powerfully demonstrates how thoughtful design can contribute to creating a more sustainable, equitable, and aesthetically pleasing world.
